International Students' Stories: Croatia through the Eyes of an Exchange Student

1. Why did you choose Croatia as your study destination?
I chose Croatia because it offers a good balance between quality education, an international student environment, and a great opportunity to experience a new culture while studying in Europe.
2. Take us back to your first days in Croatia. What were your first impressions, and was there anything that surprised you?
My first days in Croatia were filled with mixed emotions, but in a good way. Everything was new - the city, university, people, and daily life - so I was excited but also a little nervous. What surprised me most was how quickly the new environment started to feel comfortable and familiar.

3. What is student life like for you?
Student life here has been a really nice mix of studying, exploring, and meeting new people. I live in private accommodation, and I often eat at student cafeterias. I’ve also had the chance to travel around Croatia and visit some neighbouring countries. One of the best parts has been meeting other international students and making friends from different backgrounds, while also getting to know Croatian students.
4. What do you enjoy most about living and studying in Zagreb/Croatia?
What I enjoy most is the balance Zagreb gives me. It’s a lively city with a lot to explore, but at the same time, it feels comfortable and easy to adapt to. I especially enjoy meeting people from different countries and experiencing everyday life in a new culture.

5. Have you learned any Croatian during your studies? If so, how has it helped you in your everyday life?
Yes, I’ve picked up some basic Croatian during my time here. Even though I’m still learning, knowing simple words and phrases has made everyday situations easier, especially when shopping, ordering food, or talking to local people. It also makes me feel more connected to the culture.
6. How has your experience in Croatia influenced you, both personally and professionally?
My experience in Croatia has made me more independent and open-minded. Living in a new environment taught me to adapt, communicate with different people, and step outside my comfort zone. Professionally, studying in an international environment has given me a broader perspective and more confidence about my future career.
7. What advice or message would you share with international students who are considering studying in Croatia?
I would say: don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Croatia is not just a place to study - it’s an opportunity to meet new people, experience a different culture, travel, and grow as a person. Come with an open mind and make the most of every experience.
8. Has studying in Croatia changed your plans for the future?
Yes, definitely. It made me more open to international opportunities and showed me that I would like to continue building my career in an international environment. It also gave me a clearer idea of the kind of experiences I want to have in the future.
