Students have various options for learning Croatian before their arrival to Croatia and during their stay in the country:
- Croaticum – Centre for Croatian as a Second and Foreign Language is the oldest and largest institution engaged in teaching, research and description of Croatian as a second and foreign language. It is part of the Department of Croatian Language and Literature at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Zagreb. Croaticum offers different types of programmes: Semester Course of the Croatian Language and Culture, One-Month Course of the Croatian Language and Culture, Croaticum Summer, Autumn and Winter School of the Croatian Language and Culture, Specialised Intensive Course of the Croatian Language and Culture, Online A1 course, and Individual lessons in Croatian language and culture.
- The University of Zagreb, the Croatian Heritage Foundation & the University Computing Centre offer an e-learning course of the Croatian language at the beginner level. The course is aimed at people with no previous knowledge of Croatian, or with very basic knowledge of the language. - Rijeka School of Croatian Studies operates within the Department of Croatian language and literature at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Rijeka. The Rijeka School of Croatian Studies promotes the knowledge of Croatian language, literature and culture internationally and teaching Croatian as a second or foreign language, as well as organises assessment of Croatian as a second or foreign language. The School of Croatian Language, Culture and Civilisation takes place at the end of June / beginning of July.
- Some higher education institutions offer Croatian courses to foreign students enrolled in their study programmes.
